Prompt Engineering for Commercial Teams

Practical prompt construction for marketing, sales and operations teams, structure, context, constraints and evaluation.

Updated 11 Mar 2026

The four-part structure

Reliable prompts share a common anatomy: role, context, task and constraints. Prompts that fail usually omit constraints, which is where most of the quality actually lives.

  • Role: who the model should behave as, and to what standard.
  • Context: the specific facts it must work from.
  • Task: one clearly bounded output.
  • Constraints: length, format, tone, prohibited content.

Supplying context properly

Vague prompts produce generic output because generic output is the statistically safe answer. Supply the actual positioning, the actual audience and the actual proof points rather than describing them abstractly.

Constraints do the heavy lifting

Specify what must not appear as precisely as what must. Prohibited claims, banned phrases, and format limits improve output quality more reliably than any amount of instruction rewriting.

Iterating systematically

Change one variable at a time and keep a record. Teams that rewrite the whole prompt each attempt never learn which change produced the improvement.

Evaluating output

Define what good looks like before generating. A simple rubric, accuracy, on-brand voice, structural fit, usefulness, makes review fast and consistent across a team.

Building a prompt library

Treat proven prompts as organisational assets. Version them, assign owners, and record which produced measurably better results. The library compounds; individual expertise does not.
